An important announcement from
the publisher of The New York Times

Fine Print
Dear New York Times Reader,

Today marks a significant transition for The New York Times as we introduce digital subscriptions. It’s an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform. The change will primarily affect those who are heavy consumers of the content on our Web site and on mobile applications.

This change comes in two stages. Today, we are rolling out digital subscriptions to our readers in Canada, which will enable us to fine-tune the customer experience before our global launch. On March 28, we will begin offering digital subscriptions in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

If you are a home delivery subscriber of The New York Times, you will continue to have full and free access to our news, information, opinion and the rest of our rich offerings on your computer, smartphone and tablet. International Herald Tribune subscribers will also receive free access to NYTimes.com.

If you are not a home delivery subscriber, you will have free access up to a defined reading limit. If you exceed that limit, you will be asked to become a digital subscriber.

This is how it will work, and what it means for you:

  • On NYTimes.com, you can view 20 articles each month at no charge (including slide shows, videos and other features). After 20 articles, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber, with full access to our site.
  • On our smartphone and tablet apps, the Top News section will remain free of charge. For access to all other sections within the apps, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber.
  • The Times is offering three digital subscription packages that allow you to choose from a variety of devices (computer, smartphone, tablet). More information about these plans is available atnytimes.com/access.
  • Again, all New York Times home delivery subscribers will receive free access to NYTimes.com and to all content on our apps. If you are a home delivery subscriber, go tohomedelivery.nytimes.com to sign up for free access.
  • Readers who come to Times articles through links from search, blogs and social media like Facebook and Twitter will be able to read those articles, even if they have reached their monthly reading limit. For some search engines, users will have a daily limit of free links to Times articles.
  • The home page at NYTimes.com and all section fronts will remain free to browse for all users at all times.

For more information, go to nytimes.com/digitalfaq.

Thank you for reading The New York Times, in all its forms.

Sincerely,
Arthur Sulzberger Jr.

When wordpress went down…!

The early morning of June 11th (or June 10 evening for the folks in US west coast) saw wordpress.com going down! This is the first time that I remember such a big outage ever since I started with wordpress. It was just giving an error message saying “WordPress will be back shortly!”. Millions of blogs hosted on wordpress were affected because of this. Also non-wordpress hosted blogs using wordpress were affected for their stats. As the stats plugin uses API keys issued by wordpress.

Wordpress.com goes down, affects wordpress stats as well.

Wordpress.com goes down, affects wordpress stats as well.

Majority of wordpress blogs are up now and rest are slowly crawling back to normalcy. The main site is yet to be restored.

Next level of Niagra Scam – Compensation Letter

In the next level of Niagra scam, the scammer no longer talks about any accident or crash or any misfortune that happened. Instead straight forward he goes away telling he is sorry that the last fund transfer attempt failed. You should contact his secretary to try it all out again. lol.

THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT EVER REPLY TO SUCH EMAILS!

Compensation Letter from Mr Musa Issaka

ATT: GOOD FRIEND,

I’m sorry but happy to inform you about my success in getting those funds transferred under the cooperation of a new partner from London though I tried my best to involve you in the business but God decided the whole situations. Presently I’m in London for investment projects with my own share of the total sum. Meanwhile, I didn’t forget your past efforts and attempts to assist me in transferring those funds despite that it failed us some how.

Now contact my secretary in Burkina Faso her name is Mrs. Demba Narus on her e-mail address below (demba_nerus2006@w.cn) ask him to send you the total of $4.8m, which I kept for your compensation for all the past efforts and attempts to assist me in this matter. I appreciated all your efforts at that time very much.
So feel free and get in touched with my secretary Mrs. Demba Narus and instruct him where to send the amount to you.

Please do let me know immediately you receive it so that we can share the joy after all the suffer ness at that time. In the moment, I’m very busy here because of the investment projects which I and the new partner are having at hand, finally, remember that I had forwarded instruction to the secretary on your behalf to receive that money, so feel free to get in touch with Mrs. Demba Narus. She will send the amount to you without any delay.

Regards.
Mr. Musa Issaka

Will @Google Search replace @twitter search?

Google just launched their another innovative feature in the field of RTI(Real Time Indexing): Search across twitter archives.

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/replay-it-google-search-across-twitter.html

The one thing I *LIKED* about the google RTI was their twitter integration. It showed me my latest tweet (10 mins old! ) Thats pretty cool.
Will Google Search replace twitter search?

Time lag!

This thoughts been for a while in my mind! When you work for a US company, you come to know about happenings and holidays in the US before you come to know when is holi! The latest news piece that prompted me to come back to this particular train of thoughts is the news piece about the Playsation 3 time issue. The older PS3 (non-slim versions) considered 2010 as a leap year. As a result their time mismatched from the servers on the Playstation Network and some of the user data (trophies won etc) were unavailable/corrupted for some users. Even as we speak, Sony updated with the news and the fix (manually changing the date on PS to 1 March 2010 fixed the issue). However, many of the US news majors on the net are yet to catch up with the latest update and still running the news about the failure without the latest updates. It leads me to believe that the US night time news can be better handled by folks where its daytime. Interesting thought! Will any online News media try out the same?

So many times reading a particular news piece in the newspaper or watching it on the TV, I feel that ain’t that a old news? Yeah, maybe coz being employed by an internet giant, I get to know News as it happens while the traditional media takes its own sweet time to comeup with the latest (err.. oxymoron? )!
